Workflow

Workflow is a common term for the automation of a process that flows across an organization, mainly between people. A common example is document approval workflow, where a document is passed between staff in an organization to be reviewed and approved – as happens for insurance claims or planning applications. A workflow describes the activities and people involved in getting such a task completed.

The term workflow has been superseded by business process management [BPM]. While the terms are almost interchangeable, business process management usually implies that system as well as human tasks are being coordinated. Where most workflow products can route work between people, they often have difficulty integrating to third party IT systems, meaning that key steps in a process are broken.
